Love What You Do
A good friend told me something very personal the other day. After thinking about long, she had to take one of the most difficult decisions. It was concerning her career. My friend realized she wasn’t fulfilled working in a hotel anymore. It is now clearer than ever that I could not fit in a ‘box’, she told me while I listening to her story.
Rules, standards, a square frame of mind; simply, it isn’t made for me, she added; it was never in fact.
For years, she tried, going from job to job… thinking a better position might make her happy. What eventually she realized is that it would always be the same ball game, just under a different name and with different people. She realized that she had to create her own position and work for herself.
The hardest part was to leave her colleagues whom she had learnt to love as much as her own family. The second hardest part was dealing with all those fears that arise: fear of boredom, of financial instability, of the unknown…
On the other hand, she said, what she realized is that if she wasn’t happy, she couldn’t spread happiness either. Happiness attracts happiness.
It wasn’t an easy decision for her. Probably one of the hardest she took. Even more so than going around the world for a year. Why? Because this time she had no financial backup. I haven’t ‘planned’ for this to happen, she told me… Traveling (leaving) for me is second nature, she told me with a sad look in her eyes. But staying, dealing with her fears, diving in the complete unknown… that’s petrifying.
Somehow, she knows she will be ok. She knows; because she listened to her heart and every time she did so in the past, absolutely wonderful things happened.
We spend most of our lives working, sometimes working in conditions that makes our soul weary. Imagine just for a minute what the world would look like if everyone loved what they did. I believe the world would be a much happier place to live.
What I say to you today is “love what you do, or learn to love it”. It is your duty as a human.
